How to use it

Agree the scope broadly before you write it down, then complete the SOW at the start of the project alongside the PID. Both parties sign it before work begins, and any later change to scope, cost or timescale goes through change control. For how the PID fits alongside it, read our guide: What should a Project Initiation Document contain?

FAQs

What format is it?

A Word document (.docx) you can edit and brand as your own.

What's the difference between a SOW and a PID?

The Statement of Work is the agreement between a client and a supplier: what will be delivered, when and on what commercial terms. The PID is the project's own authority document, covering how the project will be run, governed and controlled.

Is the Statement of Work template free?

It's part of the PMO Governance Pack, alongside the other core project documents. Our PMO Health Check is free.
